DOCUMENT TYPE AND REF No TECHNICAL NEWS SHEET CT (MOTH) No 36 Issue 1

TITLE: COVER FOR CONTROL BOX IN THE FRONT COCKPIT CLASSIFICATION
INFORMATION

1.  PLANNING INFORMATION

A. Effectivity

All DH 60X, G & M, DH82, DH82A and Queen Bee

B. Reason

In a recent DH82A Tiger Moth accident the pilot encountered a severe control restriction at a very low attitude from which recovery was not possible.  The aircraft was being flown from the rear cockpit with the front cockpit control column removed.

Evidence from the subsequent investigation strongly suggested that the restriction occurred as a result of the Quick Release Fitting of the unsecured front harness falling into the gap between the front control column base stub fitting and the surrounding aperture.  No aperture cover was fitted and the protective leather gaiter around the base of the column had been removed. lt was also noted that the gaiter around the rear cockpit column was torn.

C. Description

A control box cover Pt No H19901A Mk 1/H19901 Mk 2 and associated catch Pt No H19582 should be fitted to blank off the aperture and prevent the ingress of loose articles during single-pilot operations with the front column removed.  This cover forms part of the build standard of the certificated aircraft and any change to these standards should be subject to modification action.(See also sketch)

Operators are advised to inspect their aircraft to determine if this cover and catch (or alternative locally approved cover) are fitted and are recommended to ensure that the protective gaiters in both cockpits are free from damage.
